Learning to Drive

Duncan is a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (A.D.I) sanctioned by the D.V.S.A.

He provides client centred manual driving lessons in the Warminster, Westbury and Trowbridge areas, calmly and safely. He promotes an environment where mistakes are ok, we can learn from them, so as long as you are being responsible and doing your best then no worries , he’s got you (dual controls are a wonderful thing)!

He’s had the opportunity to help many people learn how to how to drive.

He’d love now to see whether we could work together too and help you achieve your ‘why’ driving ? (freedom, see my horses more, do the school run, get to work, college, school, football easier and out of the rain! see my friends more and its a cool thing to do!) are just some of the examples we’ve been told that how ‘Learning to Drive’ would help!

How will you learn?

Of course, we point you in the right direction, really it’s down to you, its your lesson, we’re very supportive, that’s our style. We have the Technical content of each lesson which is listed in the ‘What will you Learn’ section below. That’s what you’ll need, its in the Lesson syllabus, to be a safe driver for the rest of your life. How do you learn it though? Well, we’ll be led by you and we’ll be calm. By the way, if its your first driving lesson ever, you must have a Provisional Driving licence and bring it along with you, we’ll also need to see it if its your first time with us.

How do you learn best?

  • Visually? You can watch a video via an app, look at a diagram, or I can demonstrate
  • Reading? We have material you can read and you can make notes too
  • Listening? We can have a chat about it.
  • Doing? Practise, practise, practise!

We discuss this so you’re comfortable in the environment.

Not sure how you learn best? We’ve got an interesting little procedure you can do to find out, that is optional , of course

When we get the car moving and start to learn, we can talk you calmly through it, (telling you what to do) prompting you (reminding you what to do) , or you can just do, your choice! We will always be planning the road ahead to make sure you are safe and will intervene verbally or physically (e.g dual controls) if we consider it necessary for your safety, at any stage. Then we can discuss the situation quietly afterwards.

So this is the Technical Information bit. We’ll discuss a topic below from the syllabus and set a lesson ‘goal’ to work toward you achieving independence at that ‘skill’ within that topic. Before that we’ll reflect on our last lesson. During our lesson we are always being flexible to change to incidental learning opportunities on route, change of goals or things that may need to be fixed. We will always choose an appropriate practise area reflecting your experience and skill level for our topic. Safety is our priority.
